Brexit will introduce security challenges for the UK (and we'll still have to comply with EU law

Dr Dimitrios Giannoulopoulos

Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas has just published an article in the Criminal Law Review which examines ‘The Uneasy Relationship between the UK and European Criminal Law’ - [2016] Crim LR 517-536.

The article reflects on the complex relationship between UK and European Criminal Law, and reaches the very interesting conclusion that Brexit will manage to limit the avenues of co-operation between the UK and its Member States, while at the same time continuing to impose into the UK the requirement to comply with EU law should the government wish to continue co-operation with its European partners.

Brexit will thus introduce a number of security challenges for the UK without achieving the perceived aim of “independence” from EU law’.
